The Journey into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Your 30s: A Purple Belt Perspective

When I look back at the day I first stepped into a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) gym in 2010, fresh out of college wrestling, I had no idea what an incredible journey lay ahead. Wrestling since I was 11 had ingrained certain habits—high-paced, intensity-driven, continuously “go go go.” Little did I know that BJJ would turn that mindset on its head, literally and figuratively.

Is It Safe?

Safety first, right? Yes, BJJ is a contact sport, and the risk of injury comes with that. However, under the supervision of experienced instructors and with the right attitude towards learning, BJJ is relatively safe, and injuries are not all that common. One key is learning to tap early and often. It’s like resetting the game without the pain.😉

Benefits

The benefits of BJJ are aplenty—physical, mental, and even social. BJJ is a full-body workout that improves my strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. Mentally, it’s a chess game requiring strategy, patience, and problem-solving skills. Plus, the camaraderie! I’ve met an incredible group and built lasting friendships on the mat.

Am I Too Old?

Not! Whether you’re starting a new hobby, career, or relationship, age is often just a number, and the same applies here. BJJ is designed for everyone, regardless of age. It’s about adjusting your pace, listening to your body, and training smart. I’ve seen beginners well into their 50s and 60s owning the mats and loving every minute.

Is It Right for Me?

Only you can answer this, but BJJ offers something valuable for everyone. If you love learning new skills, crave a challenge, want to build confidence and discipline, or get in shape, it’s right for you. It pushes your boundaries and offers endless opportunities to grow.

Belt Ranking & What Each Stripe Means

The belt system in BJJ is essentially a roadmap of your progress, with each rank and stripe symbolizing milestones achieved. Starting from the white belt, progressing through the blue, purple, brown, and finally, the black belt, each stripe represents skill advancement, knowledge acquisition, and personal growth. It’s a marathon, not a sprint: patience, young Padawan.

Who Can Do BJJ?

BJJ is for everyone—men, women, children, folks in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond. It’s an inclusive sport where you train with people from all walks of life, ages, and skill levels. There’s a place for everyone on the mat.

Weight Classes

Weight classes help to ensure fair competition levels during matches and tournaments. This means you’ll go up against people roughly within your weight range, making the sparring sessions safe and competitive.

My BJJ Experience

As for me, I’m currently a proud purple belt. One of the biggest lessons BJJ taught me was to switch off my wrestling “go go go” mindset. BJJ is a gentle yet deceptive game of patience and strategy. Think of it as a physical game of chess, where each move must be calculated. Trust me, rushing in BJJ often leads straight into a guillotine. 😄 And I’ve had my fair share of those!

BJJ has instilled a sense of calm, even in the chaos of a rolling session. It has shaped me to stay composed, both on offense and defense. So, if you’ve ever felt the urge to tackle a new challenge, foster mental toughness, and build meaningful relationships, then BJJ might be your calling.

Ready to tie up your belt and step onto the mat? Give it a shot. Age, weight, background—none of it matters. Show up, learn, stay disciplined and respectful, and most importantly, stay humble. Put in the work, and who knows? Maybe one day, you’ll be a black belt💪
